The consistency of overnight policing in Mosgiel is being investigated.
Labour MP Clare Curran recently raised concerns with Southern Police District commander Superintendent Andrew Coster about Mosgiel being left unattended on some nights.
It was revealed last month no police officers were stationed in Mosgiel overnight when a man called 111 to report guns being fired in Waipori one weekend.
The incident was not attended by police, as it was not considered a priority for the officers covering Mosgiel from Dunedin at the time.
Ms Curran said she was told by several people the Mosgiel police station had been left unmanned overnight on many occasions.
She sought answers from Supt Coster at a meeting in Dunedin last week.
''He confirmed to me that there is meant to be a police presence in Mosgiel overnight, especially at weekends.
''I raised with him my concern that the Waipori incident was not the only night the station was unmanned, and he's taken that seriously and given me an undertaking that he's going to investigate that and get back to me,'' Ms Curran said.
She was pleased Supt Coster had taken her concerns seriously and said she looked forward to ''furthering the discussion'' about Mosgiel police.
''I'm not trying to overdramatise this issue, but there are about 14,000 people in the wider Mosgiel area,'' Ms Curran said.
She understood it took Dunedin police only 10 minutes to get to Mosgiel ''at speed'' for emergencies, but said having a police presence in the town was as much about public perception as it was about resourcing.
''I'll be seeking an assurance from him [Supt Coster] that he has fully investigated the consistency of the police presence overnight in Mosgiel,'' Ms Curran said.
