Sevens: Otago women defeat Brazil in final of tournament

The Otago women's sevens team won a tournament in Christchurch yesterday.

Otago beat Brazil 34-0 in the final after it defeated Canterbury 17-10 in the semifinal. An invitational team, made up of players from the other three sides, completed the four teams at the tournament.

The Otago team won the tournament at North Hagley Park, despite losing its first two games.

Coach Mike Moeahu said the competition was tough, but in the semifinal against Canterbury Otago had the lead and hung on as Canterbury tried to come back into the game.

The final was one-way traffic against a green Brazilian side.

Those to impress for Otago were Halie Hurring, Rebecca Todd and Sonia Panapa.

The Otago men's team did not venture north for the Christchurch tournament, the men's side of which was won by a Canterbury side.

The focus now switches to Timaru next Saturday, for the South Island regional tournament.

The Otago women will be keen to make an impact after one bad game last year shut them out of qualifying for the national tournament.

The Otago men will head to Timaru as the defending champions but will have to win the tournament with some new faces after defections from last season.
