Rugby: Jane back on wing, so Smith at centre

Ben Smith has made the predicted move to centre, while Andrew Hore will not make any swansong on his home ground as the All Blacks take on the Wallabies at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Saturday.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, in naming his side to take on the Australians, has made the predictable choice in moving Smith from right wing into centre while Cory Jane - after just one and-a-half games for Wellington - comes into the starting side on the right wing.

Hansen has a lot of faith in Jane and his talents. The 30-year-old has been out all season after a nasty knee injury at pre-season training for the Hurricanes.

He made it back on to the field for Wellington against Auckland a couple of weeks ago, playing half a game, and then played a full game for the Lions in their loss to Hawkes Bay last Thursday.

Although he was relatively quiet in that match, he has been whistled straight back into the test team.

Jane has the skill set Hansen is keen on from his wingers - ability in the air, a player who makes few mistakes and the nous to sniff out chances and make the most of them.

Smith's move to centre has been widely signalled from Hansen and his performance will be a sub-plot to the test.

Aaron Cruden retains his place in the pivot position, despite a knee injury forcing him off the field in the last test, at Ellis Park against the Springboks.

Wellington lock Jeremy Thrush will start his first test and Brodie Retallick moves to the reserves.

Up front, Keven Mealamu gets the start, with his back-up, Dane Coles, coming off the bench.

There is no room for hooker Hore. There had been speculation he would play his final game in the black jersey at Forsyth Barr Stadium before heading into retirement. But he may come into the equation of making the end-of-season tour to the northern hemisphere. That squad is due to be named on Sunday.

Hore (35) will not be back for the Highlanders next year and is still weighing up his options.

Tom Taylor moves on to the bench to replace Charles Piutau.

Hansen said the side faced one of the biggest tasks in sport: backing up from a great performance.

The All Blacks coach said if the side did not improve on its last performance it was liable to be overtaken.

The Wallabies will name their team today and will travel to Dunedin tomorrow morning from Queenstown.
