Green Island's finest, Ben Smith, will not want this year to end.

Smith (27) scored a try in the All Blacks' 38-27 win over South Africa in Johannesburg yesterday and with it set an individual try-scoring record.

Smith scored his eighth try in the Rugby Championship, a record for the competition, including the Tri-Nations, which started in 1996.

He beat the record set by a couple of handy players - Springbok winger Bryan Habana and All Black fullback Christian Cullen.

Smith's record continues what has been an impressive year. He was the outstanding player in a poor Highlanders team, gaining the most metres of any player in the Super 15.

He was then picked on the right wing for the All Blacks, the first season he has been first-choice for the national side.

The former King's High School pupil scored a hat trick of tries against the Wallabies in the first test of the competition in Sydney and another two in the return match in Wellington. He grabbed two last week against Argentina in La Plata and then finished off with his crucial effort against the Springboks.

He will get to play on his home ground when the All Blacks take on the Wallabies in a Bledisloe Cup test at Forsyth Barr Stadium on October 19.

Although he is equally skilled at fullback and wing, Smith is expected to play at centre for the All Blacks on their end-of-year tour when incumbent Conrad Smith has a break.

Ben Smith signed a four-year deal with the New Zealand Rugby Union in July to keep playing rugby in New Zealand and in the South.
