Rugby: Donald's presence a mystery

Stephen Donald.
Stephen Donald.
Right, let's put two and two together and get? Spotted in Dunedin over the weekend was the Beaver himself, Stephen Donald.

Why Donald, the hero of the 2011 All Black World Cup victory, was in Dunedin remains a bit of mystery.

But that does not stop the obvious question being asked.

The Highlanders are on the lookout for an experienced first five-eighth. And doesn't Donald fit the bill?

He is experienced. Turns 30 in December. Has played 85 games of Super rugby.

He is playing rugby in Japan, and we all know the Highlanders love that connection.

Donald is also a bit of a hot and cold merchant.

He can be world-class one minute, and shockingly average the next.

There have been plenty of Highlanders who fit into that category of late.

The Highlanders did not return calls yesterday. Donald has signed to play for the Mitsubishi Dynaboars in Japan this season after a less than stellar couple of seasons for Bath in England.

New Zealand Maori first five-eighth Willie Ripia is believed to be linking with the Highlanders but, as of last week, nothing had been signed.
