Cricket: One more quest for Green Island

Green Island may not have won the Dunedin one-day or two-day cricket finals, but club secretary Jeremy Scott reckons it has claimed the two titles that matter most.

On Saturday, Green Island beat Albion to win the overall senior cricket banner, the Bing Harris Shield.

Green Island lost both the two-day and the one-day finals to Carisbrook Dunedin, but it accumulated enough points over both competitions to win the overall title from Carisbrook.

It is the sixth time Green Island has won the Bing Harris Shield.

Earlier in the season, the club also won the Otago-Southland club knock-out competition, earning the right to take part in the national club cricket championships in Auckland for the ninth time.

Green Island has won the tournament a record five times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2005 and 2006) and is the only club to have won the title more than three times.

The annual tournament, held at the Cornwall Cricket Club in Auckland, begins on Tuesday, April 8, with the final played on Sunday, April 13.

A club representing each of the six associations takes part. Scott said Green Island's success stemmed from having a well-balanced team.

The bowling line-up was headed by Bradley Scott backing up from a season with New Zealand A, the Black Caps Twenty/20 World Cup squad and Otago.

In his absence with the Otago side, Dion Lobb and the find of the season in opening bowler Russell Ritchie (47 wickets) ensured Green Island was able to keep most teams in check.

The batting was led by Otago's Jordan Sheed, along with Scott Simpson and Mark Joyce, who both scored more than 600 runs this season.

However, Hamish Rutherford, Jamie Munro, Barry White and Nick Smith also produced significant innings for the team this season.
