A digger is lowered into place in a property next to the Olveston Historic Home in Dunedin yesterday.

Some work is needed to replace a retaining wall between the properties. Heavy rainfall in July weakened the wall, which was close to collapse, a Dunedin City Council spokesman said.

A tawhairaunui (red beech) tree was removed from the area in September in preparation for the wall work. There was no way to safely replace the retaining wall without removing the tree, the council spokesman said.
