Animal testing labs evacuated after fire

A fire led to the evacuation of the University of Otago’s animal testing building yesterday.

There was a small fire in a stairwell in the Eccles building in Great King St about 10.45am, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokeswoman said.

She said there was a bit of smoke, but everyone in the building had been evacuated and the building had not sustained any serious damage.

Crews from Dunedin, Willowbank, Roslyn, Lookout Point and St Kilda responded to the callout.

They used fans to clear smoke from the building.

A university spokeswoman said the small fire damaged a light fitting, melted a small area of a bench and a small area of vinyl flooring.

The building was evacuated for about two hours while the smoke was dispersed.

"Smoke-affected areas are being cleaned," she said.

A fire investigator will look into the cause of the fire.
