Year 11 Otago Girls' High School pupils Simone Arbuckle (left) and Barbara Taylor take part in a powhiri at the school yesterday to welcome visitors from their Shanghai sister school, Guang Ming High School.

Seven teachers from the Shanghai school visited Otago for two days as part of an eight-day holiday in New Zealand.

Guang Ming High School vice-principal Yi Jin said it was a great pleasure to have a sister school in New Zealand.

''Our students are thirsty to know more about you.''

Otago Girls' High School was one of five Dunedin schools to have made links with Shanghai recently.

Principal Linda Miller signed an agreement during a visit to Shanghai in April with the Dunedin City Council sister city delegation. Ms Jin said the powhiri was one of the most beautiful welcomes she had received.

The Shanghai school hoped to make its first student visit next year, she said.
