Dunedin's main Covid-19 vaccination centre is now running like a well-oiled machine at a former vehicle testing station.

The former hub at the Meridian Mall closed last Friday, after running for more than a year.

At its peak, more than 1000 Covid-19 injections a day were administered, but high vaccination rates in Dunedin meant a clinic of its size was now surplus to requirements.

A smaller centre — the Dunedin Immunisation Centre (Te Puna Araimate ki Otepoti) — has now officially opened in the former VTNZ building, on the corner of Hanover and Cumberland Sts.

Centre site manager Leanne Brayshaw said the new facility would allow the Southern District Health Board to continue to provide Covid-19 vaccinations to adults, and children over 5, and strengthen its ability to continue to deliver flu and MMR vaccinations to eligible people.

"It is also exciting to note that this team will be extending into additional immunisations, including for tamariki 3 years and over."

She said the new centre was operated by 10-15 staff a day, depending on planned activity, and had the ability to scale up to 500 vaccinations a day if required.

"It runs like a well-oiled machine, but we are also empathetic and compassionate — a great friendly environment to get vaccinated," she said.

"As we move to an all-in immunisation clinic, the team is looking forward to providing support where it is needed most."
