With secateurs poised, Fran Rawling poses with Othello roses at Wylde Willow Garden in Abbotsford, Dunedin.

Mrs Rawling owns the 2.1ha North Taieri Rd garden with her husband, Mike Rawling. She is also the convener of Heritage Roses Otago, which will be holding a workshop on February 27 at the garden.

Titled "Growing Roses Locally — Practical Hints", the workshop will run from 1pm-4pm.

Attendees will learn how best to grow and care for heritage roses, how to prune them, take cuttings, and make willow water, a hormone solution made from willow branches that stimulates root growth.

Heritage Roses Otago would like to spark interest in growing and caring for heritage roses and maybe gain a few new members, Mrs Rawling said.

The group would provide afternoon tea and potting mix to participants.

The New Zealand Gardens Trust listed Wylde Willow Garden as a Garden of National Significance in 2010. It is open to the public by appointment.
