Major improvements to one of Clutha's most popular visitor attractions could start by November but tourists should not face too many disruptions this summer season.

The Department of Conservation (Doc) is close to awarding a contract to enlarge car parking, and build new walking tracks and viewing platforms in and around the Nugget Point area near Kaka Point.

Doc Otago coastal area manager Robin Thomas said there had been strong interest in the project and it was close to formally awarding the contract.

The entire project will be completed in the present financial year, with some work expected to start in November and resuming again in mid to late January.

Mr Thomas said this was to reduce any possible disruption to tourists during the busy summer season.

"There will be some inconvenience at times, I imagine, but we are keen to keep that to an absolute minimum."

Work will start in November on enlarging the car parking area while construction of viewing platforms at Roaring Bay will probably begin early next year.

The project is one of Doc's biggest investments in the Catlins in recent years.

The area towards Nugget Point is poised for massive growth, with the Clutha District Council investigating a long-awaited project to seal the Nuggets Rd from Willsher Bay to the Nuggets lighthouse.
