Clutha golfers took a swing at cancer via the Longest Day golf challenge last month.

Balclutha Golf Club members Roger Pennell, Kev Baff, Ross Burnett and John "JD" Daniels teamed up and teed off at 6.02am on December 18 to raise money for the Cancer Society event.

The challenge was to complete four rounds — or 72 holes — of sponsored golf in one day to raise funds for New Zealanders facing cancer.

Their first round was completed at 9.12am and an average of 3 hours 11 minutes for each round meant they finished at 7.34 pm.

With "minimal prompting and previous agreement," a further three holes were played to show solidarity with "the old fellow" whose age happened to coincide with the achievement of completing 75 holes.

The team contributed about $3500 to the Longest Day, which has raised more than $400,000 this summer for the society so far.

They wanted to thank generous sponsors and donors including the twilight golfers, whose green fees went into the Cancer Society coffers and whose "vocal encouragement" refreshed the gang of four as they closed on the 72nd hole.
