Swimming: Godfrey best of Otago competitors at nationals

Kate Godfrey has led the way for the Otago competitors at the New Zealand short-course meeting in Wellington.

Godfrey produced outstanding swims to claim two gold medals in the 400m individual medley - in the 17-18 years age-group and in the open section.

In the open 100m backstroke she picked up a silver medal and in doing so set an Otago open record of 1min 01.22sec. She also won a bronze in the 17-18 years 200m breaststroke.

Veteran Kurt Crosland narrowly missed a world championship qualifying time in finishing second in the 100m open backstroke.

He set an Otago record in the heats of 52.96sec and then produced a quicker time in the final of 52.50,sec missing the qualifying time by 0.04sec.

In the 50m open freestyle, Crosland picked up a bronze medal, setting an Otago record in the final of 22.90sec.

Katie Kennally won the open 200m breaststroke.

Han Zhang won gold in the 14 years 100m breaststroke, with an Otago record of 1.06.74. He also won a silver in the 14 years 400m individual medley.

Jeremy Hopkins won silver medals in the 14 years 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke and then continued his good form by winning a gold in the 400m individual medley and a silver in the 50m freestyle.

Another swimmer to bag medals was Andrew Trembath, who broke the Otago record by 6sec in gaining a silver in the 15 years 400m individual medley.

He also won a silver in the 15 years 100m backstroke and bronze medals in the 100m breaststroke and 100m freestyle.

There was also a relay bronze for the boys 13-15 years freestyle club relay for the Neptune club.
