Murray Dempster is no longer surprised to be asked to pose with his military collection.

He has learnt that his extensive collection of military-related items big and small fascinates those young and old.

"It's a hobby. I get a good response; never anything negative."

It was no different at the Firearms, Fishing and Outdoors Show at Wingatui racecourse on Saturday.

He had a variety of guns on display as well as larger equipment as part of the range of displays from hunting, gun clubs and collectors at the show.

Organiser Darren Keen, of Taieri Arms and Fishing, said the aim was for there to be something for everyone so he had also asked trials rider Blake Fox to show off his skills during the two-day event.

Blake (18), a Taieri College pupil, was just back from two Australian events - the Western Australia state championships where he was third in the A grade, and the Australian Championship, where he won the youth grade.

The varied displays allowed people to see things they normally would not get a chance to, Mr Keen said.

"There are so many different uses, from hunting, collecting and sports shooting."

About 800 adults attended the show over the two days, he said.
