A cycle track in Dunedin is being upgraded with hi-tech features and updated infrastructure so children can continue to practise their skills in a safe and fun way.

The 18-year-old learn-to-ride track at Marlow Park — commonly known as the dinosaur park — would receive a $350,000 upgrade with new features and more relevant infrastructure, Dunedin City Council group manager transport Jeanine Benson said.

The new facility would feature a tunnel, bridges over a faux river, traffic lights and a bike repair station.

The track would enable children to safely practise on current road infrastructure on their bikes and scooters without the pressure of traffic in a safe, fun environment.

Adults who wanted to brush up on their riding skills could also use the facility, she said.

The park would be divided into a main track and a beginner’s area.

The main track would have electronic devices such as flashing lights, a touchless push button at a raised pedestrian crossing and a speed feedback sign, among other features.

The upgrade was expected to be completed by the end of June.

The work was being paid for by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s community road safety fund, Ms Benson said.
