After a disastrous start to the season, when the Central side lost its first three games and conceded 17 goals, most local observers feared the worst.
However, since round four of the competition Queenstown has become a consistent performer in the league, with many players whose first instinct is to attack the defender with the ball at their feet.
A feature of the match between the teams was the awarding of three penalties, with minimal appealing by the attacking players.
The first penalty was awarded to University in the sixth minute, for a clumsy challenge, and Gui Melo stepped forward to take the kick. Rovers keeper Zayn Officer anticipated well and palmed the shot away.
University took the lead minutes later when Anthony Tarrant made a penetrating run, received the ball at pace and glided past two Rovers defenders, before sliding a composed finish past Officer.
The second penalty of the match was awarded to Queenstown in the 28th minute for a close-range hand-ball infringement. Rovers livewire Olly James accepted the opportunity and rifled the ball into the top left corner to draw level.
An entertaining second half had both teams committed to scoring the winner, and Rovers appeared to have an excellent chance when it was awarded its second penalty.
James stepped up to the mark to convert but the straight drive was well stopped by University keeper Danniel Bocatios.
Caversham maintained its one-point lead over rival Dunedin Technical with a 4-0 victory over Grants Braes, at Tahuna Park.
A brace to Evan Jones, plus goals to Harley Rodeka and Jude Fitzpatrick, had the leader complete the task with ease. Caversham will now chase wins from its final two home matches, against Green Island and Northern, to reclaim the league title.
Second-placed Dunedin Technical kept the pressure on Caversham with a 8-1 romp over Mosgiel at Memorial Park.
An in-form Alistair Rickerby claimed the first two goals of the match, followed by a penalty from Aaron Burgess.
A Tristan Prattley free kick had the visiting side in command at the halftime break.
A second-half hat trick to Aaron Burgess, plus a Brad Rodden goal, had Technical improving its goal difference while Regan Coldicott claimed a consolation goal for Mosgiel.
