After a weather-enforced postponement yesterday, Dunedin's Midwinter Carnival went without interruption ahead this evening.
An estimated 2000 people gathered in the central city for the festival's main event of the lantern parade and fireworks.
The annual celebration of the longest night of the year had been expected to draw up to 10,000 people yesterday evening but the postponement may have affected tonight's turnout.
The carnival had "A Frosty Night" theme this year and Jack Frost and the Snow Queen were expected among the parade of nearly 400 candle-lit lanterns.
Yesterday, organisers decided at 5.30pm to postpone the event due to heavy rain and wind which hit the city about 4.30pm.
