A group of outdoor adventure participants have been able to rest their weary bones in comfort this weekend as the first guests at a new facility at Berwick Camp.

The Taieri Lions group members are the first to stay at the camp since it got official sign-off on Friday allowing the newly built dormitory block to be used.

For hut warden Jenny Scott it was a huge relief as the new block had been sitting unused since it was finished in December because the hill behind it was unstable.

The hill had been stabilised and drainage completed, and the building was now safe to use.

"It's fantastic. The schools and groups who use it are very happy," Ms Scott said.

Taieri Lions adventure organiser Rob Urquhart said up until 3pm on Friday the group had been planning to bring caravans and campervans to accommodate the 32 participants.

"We were over the moon. We were very relieved it eliminated the extra work - and the new facility is great."

The course is held annually and aims to build confidence, self-esteem and leadership skills in those aged 18 and over through activities such as abseiling, kayaking, a two-day tramp and a confidence course.

More than 800 people had taken part in the course in its 22 years.

Ms Scott said now the hill had been stabilised and all the facilities opened, fundraising would continue for the next two stages of work.

Upgrading the sprinkler alarm system so the old system matched the new one would cost about $56,000, and upgrading the camp's water tanks would cost another $23,000.
