Hearing of 134 re-tested

Dunedin Hospital's audiology department has re-tested 134 children following concerns about testing protocol, but clinicians are not finding problems, audiologist Robyn McNeur says.

Of the 134, 1% had been referred for further investigation of potential problems, but no permanent hearing loss had been picked up, indicating problems were not missed at the time of the first tests.

In February, parents of 1532 children were alerted to a potential issue with testing protocol at Dunedin Hospital between 2007 and 2010.

The recall was prompted by a parent's complaint to the Health and Disability Commissioner, who was looking at the matter.

Ms McNeur said private audiologists had helped with the re-testing, and waiting lists had not increased for other patients. A handful of children were yet to be re-tested, and the department was still getting several phone calls a week from concerned parents, although it had dropped off.

Parents of the affected children were asked to contact the department if they suspected their child had hearing loss.
