Former Otago Fish & Game councillor and field officer Monty Wright has died.

He was 84.

Mr Wright was involved in the organisation for decades.

Having fished and hunted since a boy, he followed in his father’s footsteps into the Otago Acclimatisation Society, the forerunner of Otago Fish & Game.

He was elected on to the fisheries committee in 1977 and two years later became a field officer. His ranging duties took him throughout Otago.

Mr Wright retired as a field officer in 2002 and was elected the following year as a councillor.

He was chairman from 2010 to 2021.

The Otago University Rugby Football Club said in a social media post he was a club life member and former University A coach.

A private family service was held this week and a memorial service will be held next year.

A date was yet to be confirmed, his death notice said.

An obituary will follow. — APL
