A 14-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly stabbing a visitor to Gisborne in the face with a broken bottle.
Police said a visiting couple were walking through suburban Gisborne on Saturday morning when the unprovoked attack took place.
The 14-year-old, originally from Gisborne but on holiday in the city from Perth, allegedly smashed a bottle and stabbed the middle-aged man above the eye after words were exchanged, Senior Sergeant Moera Brown said.
The teen was charged with assault with a weapon and bailed to appear in Youth Court at a later date.
The man was treated by ambulance staff but did not need hospital care.
