Event organiser and Soul Yoga owner Keity Garcia said she started planning for yesterday’s event in February with the idea of promoting "real yoga" in the community and to bring together for the first time all the yoga teachers from Wanaka, Hawea, Luggate, Cromwell and Alexandra.
"The pandemic helped to give the event another reason because of the mental stress created from the virus, having to stay at home during the lockdown and not knowing whether you had a job or not," she said.
Registration for the free sessions at the Lake Wanaka Centre yesterday morning closed on Saturday night due to the overwhelming response, she said.
Auckland holidaymaker Helen Rice said that the event was "a great opportunity to meet new people and to chill out".
The International Day of Yoga originated in India on June 21, 2015, to promote global health, harmony and peace and since then has been growing in popularity around the world.
