World Wetland Day is right around the corner and this year’s celebration will take place at Wānaka’s Bullock Creek Hatchery Springs.

Friends of Bullock Creek and the Otago Fish & Game Council will host a fun day for the community in celebration of wetlands and the ongoing restoration of the special site.

Friends of Bullock Creek initiated the restoration of the hatchery springs in 2016 and have had a lot of success since their humble beginnings.

Friends of Bullock Creek trustee Andy Oxley said that when the project first started, the site had "gone wild" with a lot of invasive species impacting the biodiversity.

The restoration has gone a long way to revitalise the plant, fish and bird life with the help of more than $200,000 raised over the years.

Ms Oxley emphasised the importance of the creek, calling it an "iconic little stream" which is a prominent part of Wānaka’s central landscape.

Fish & Game Otago have been supporters of this project for many years and share the view that efforts to restore the creek should be celebrated.

Communications officer Bruce Quirey referred to the site as a "gem" and said the aim had always been to "make sure that all species thrive".

Mr Quirey said the event was not only a good way to enjoy the restored creek, but it was an opportunity to "educate the community".

In addition to a free barbecue, there will be information about native species that consider the wetland their home as well as games for people to practice their casting.

Other organisations, including Wai Wānaka and Wānaka Backyard Trapping, will also be attending to share about the conservation work they do.

The event will be held at the creek from 11am-2pm on February 2 and is open for all to join in.
