Mr Bain, wife Elizabeth, daughters Margaret and Catherine, son William and an infant travelled on the ship Silistria but Mrs Bain and the infant died on the journey.
Once in New Zealand the family settled in Wakari and later Janet Bain, a cousin of Mr Bain, came out to help look after the children and ended up marrying Mr Bain in 1864.
William then moved to Roxburgh where he worked as a butcher for 50 yearsTo celebrate, about 100 of George Bain's descendants gathered at the sports ground in Roxburgh for lunch where the adults swapped stories and the children played cricket on the field or played on the merry-go-round and bouncy castle.
Organiser Ken Bain, of Millers Flat, said he was pleased with the turnout despite many people not turning up due to a funeral in town.
