Central Otago District Council roading manager Julie Muir said the closure was a precaution as trees along this road have twice been felled recently by high winds and consequently bought down powerlines, on August 16 and again on October 24.
National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research senior climate scientist Georgina Griffiths said this week had so far been particularly windy throughout the country but Otago figures, while significant, were "not really that impressive".
She said inland Otago areas such as Cromwell, Alexandra, Wanaka and Queenstown had winds averaging about 50kmh but there would have been "gusts in localised areas that were much higher, just not recorded".
Ms Muir said the trees were on private land and on road reserve that has been fenced off by the owner of the adjoining land.
The trees are expected to be removed tomorrow.
People are being asked to detour around Burn Cottage road.
