Dunedin masters art student Jasmine Middlebrook has won the inaugural $1000 Alexandra Community Arts Viewers' Choice Award.

She is pictured with a calendar-size image of her artwork, which was part of an exhibition and competition organised by the Central Otago District Arts Trust and held at the Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery in Alexandra from September 8 to Wednesday of this week.

People voted for their favourite artwork in person at the gallery or on the arts trust website.

"A couple of thousand votes were cast online and more at the exhibition and Jasmine was well ahead of the rest," trust co-ordinator and exhibition organiser Maxine Williams said.

Two other prizes were announced on the night the exhibition opened. Andi Regan, of Wanaka, won the $5000 Central Lakes Trust Art Excellence Award and Megan Huffadine, of Bannockburn, won the $2000 CO News Central Otago Artist award.
