Tennis: McGlashan, Cosy Dell continue to set pace at top

McGlashan and Cosy Dell continued their head-to-head battle and remained unbeaten after three rounds in the Dunedin men's club competition when both secured easy wins on Saturday.

Cosy Dell gained a bonus point on its rival when it won 6-0 against Balmacewen, while McGlashan dropped a rubber in beating Mornington-Roslyn.

Eastern Harbour remains the women's leader having dropped only one rubber in three rounds. It beat Balmacewen Sapphires 6-0 on Saturday.

Harry James (McGlashan) lost only three games against Matt Foo (Balmacewen) in an entertaining contest in which Foo showed promising touches mixed with errors arising from limited recent match play.

Carlos Reid was convincing in the third set to beat long-time rival Henry Hailes, while Paddy Ou beat the normally steady Adam Williams 6-1, 6-1.

Ollie Scott was the only winner for Mornington with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Joe Highton. Reid and Ou won a remarkable 10-0 super tiebreak third set to beat Scott and Williams in the bottom double.

The student Cosy Dell team, led by Nick Hornstein who beat Andrew Hilliard 6-2, 6-2, won all six in straight sets against a depleted Balmacewen squad. The clash between James and Hornstein in two weeks is eagerly awaited.

Eastern Harbour beat Taieri 6-0 with the feature a closely fought top single in which Campbell Higgins took the big points in holding out Andrew Mitchell 7-6, 7-5.

Eastern Harbour women took a hollow 6-0 win over a depleted and very young Balmacewen Sapphires team. Canterbury student Kirstin McDonald provided the only resistance but still lost 6-2, 6-0 to Georgia Hume.

Mornington-Roslyn beat Balmacewen Diamonds by taking both doubles through their more experienced pairings.

Jessie Stevenson kept her unbeaten record at No 1, and Andrea King fought long and hard to beat Fiona Bell 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 but these were Balmacewen's only successes.

St Clair claimed a countback eight sets to six win over Taieri. Rebecca Harkerss (Taieri) came from a set down to beat Lauren Fowler at No 1 but the seasiders took three other rubbers in straight sets.
