An ex-prisoner who wanted help from police lay on the road outside the Dunedin Police Station this morning.

Buses leaving from the neighbouring hub on Great King St North had to drive around him, until police came out to assist.

The incident took place about 9.45am.

Sergeant Ian Paulin said the man left jail about two months ago, and had run out of money.

After being trespassed from several addresses had nowhere to go.

The man had been referred to the Otago Prison Aid and Rehabilitation Society.
