A Roslyn Fire Station crew removed the metal cover from the drain and helped the ducklings, part of a troupe of eight belonging to the same mother duck.
''We got a phone call from a lady at the address,'' Mr Harradine said. ''It wasn't the easiest to reach them.''
The ducklings were retrieved and placed in a cardboard box.
Maxine Ramsey, who called the fire station, said the trio were doing well but she had been unable to find the mother duck.
She would be taking the ducklings to Bird Rescue Dunedin today.
