Workers given three days' notice

Some Central Foods workers are to be made redundant but others will keep their jobs, after Dunedin-based Kaan's Catering Supplies Ltd bought the wholesale distribution part of the business.

Central Foods director Jeff Vessey confirmed staff members were given only three days' notice of the loss of their jobs, before the closure of the business was announced on Wednesday, but would not say why.

Central Foods had depots in Alexandra and Dunedin.

Kaan's director Lindsay Kaan said while the future of the Central Foods outlet was not certain, his catering supplies company had taken over the lease and would carry on using it.

"Kaan's will take on the servicing of their [Central Foods'] existing clients, and we have employed as many Central Foods staff as possible. Many of the Central Foods customers are also already Kaan's customers, and for those who aren't, we are endeavouring to ensure that their representative remains unchanged," Mr Kaan said.
