The junior quiz event featured intermediate and years 9 and 10 pupils from local schools. In a senior quiz (years 11 to 13) last Tuesday, defending champion Mythamphetamine again took top honours.
The event has been run each year since 1988 by the Classical Association Of Otago and the University of Otago classics programme.
Event co-ordinator senior lecturer Dr Gwynaeth McIntyre said organisers were astounded by the knowledge shown by junior pupils, especially as many of the juniors studied classics in their own time because it was not yet part of their curriculum.
It was hoped such events would grow interest in classics, a strategy that had previously proved successful, as this year's quiz MC, Kiri Lenagh-Glue, took part in the quizzes as a pupil and was now doing an honours degree.
