Student politics newcomer Mr Edgar (19), a second-year bachelor of commerce marketing student from Manapouri, claimed the OUSA presidency by securing almost half the total number of votes cast.
"I think I'm someone your typical average scarfie living on Hyde St or Castle St can relate really well to," he said when asked what was the secret to his successful campaign.
In his first foray into student politics, Mr Edgar secured 1265 votes (48.95%) of the total 2584 cast, overwhelming the other candidates who are all existing OUSA executive members.
Colleges and communications officer Francisco Hernandez came second with 525 votes, vice-president Bradley Russell claimed 423 votes, and welfare officer Shonelle Eastwood managed 292 votes.
Mr Edgar said he planned to focus on "doing the basics well ... learning everyone's name and the process involved [with OUSA]," during his six-month tenure.
"If I don't get run out of office by people wielding pitchforks and burning torches then I'd love to give it another crack next year," he said.
