Skateboarding's artistic elements were on display at an inaugural indoors event which attracted about 250 people to a Parry St, Dunedin, venue on Saturday.

The "Create and Skate" exhibition featured the artistic works of former professional rider Levi Hawken (35), who designed works for several ramps and skating obstacles for the Youth Week event.

Create and Skate organiser Seth Gorrie said about 50 skaters took part in a skate jam competition, which incorporated the art pieces Mr Hawken contributed.

"We had some amazing tricks. It was the first time we've been able to hold an event like this at an indoors venue," he said.

The Dunedin City Council's youth action committee had joined forces with the Dunedin Bike Blade and Board development trust to secure the Parry St warehouse for the exhibition, which continues Youth Week activities traditionally held for the "Skate to Relate" events, he said.

Skate to Relate was set up four years ago by Dunedin's skateboarding community in response to the deaths of three young men and is now a regular fixture on the events calender for local skaters, Mr Gorrie said.

Spectators watched the skaters compete across three age-group categories, Mr Gorrie said.

Mr Hawken's artworks will be kept in storage until "suitable space in the suburbs" can be found for the decorated skateboarding obstacles, Mr Gorrie said.
