Octagon clock's 10.30 chimes 'a bit of a glitch'

Dunedin's malfunctioning Municipal Chambers clock is not broken - it is just old, Dunedin City Council staff say.

Council staff were sent to investigate the clock's mechanism yesterday morning, after it let loose a 10-chime peal of bells at 10.30am.

A passer-by alerted the Otago Daily Times yesterday after hearing the bells and looking up to spot the error.

Council city property assistant manager Rhonda Abercrombie said the erroneous chiming was "a bit of a glitch", but no mechanical fault had been discovered.

"We're actually not quite sure what happened, but certainly at 11 o'clock it chimed 11 and I'm assuming all is OK.

"I guess if you were about 120 years old you would have the occasional glitch, so we would put this down to an occasional glitch," she said.

Council staff would continue to monitor the clock's performance to see if any other faults were detected, she said.
