Sister and brother act Anahera and Kairangi Koni have enhanced their reputation as two of the best juniors playing the game.

The primary school-age children were at or near the top of the leader board at the US Kids Australian Junior Golf Open at Riverside Oaks Golf Resort in the outer Sydney suburb of Cattai at the weekend.

Anahera (9) won the girls' nine and under grade, while Kairangi placed third in the boys' 10 and under grade

Anahera was leading at the end of day one, but the field fought back on the second day to set up a tense finish.

The ninth hole provided some drama. She sent her ball into the water hazard and recorded a triple bogey. However, she had been hitting straight and long and had enough of a lead to win by one shot.

"It was a stressful hole - for Dad as the caddy at least - but the smile on Arni's face suggested otherwise," Dan Koni wrote in an email to the Otago Daily Times.

Kairangi headed into the final day in third place. He also had trouble with the water hazards.

He put the ball into the drink a couple of times on the opening day. But he managed to salvage bogeys from great approach shots in his short game.

His driving improved on the second day. The 10-year-old hit 12 of 14 fairways and held on to third place.

"Overall, considering last year's results, where Anahera was third and Kairangi was sixth, it was pleasing for them to finish in high positions this year," Koni wrote.

Kairangi has been named in the Otago under-16 team to play in the South Island Men's under-19 tournament at Harewood next week.
