Monday's poem

The Jewel

- David Karena-Holmes

Waking this morning, I found our dogs
had strewn the contents of a rubbish bin
from one end of the house to the other.
What to do? To spend a morning cleaning up
or sit amongst it, aiming at transcendence?
A compromise: I shoved the rubbish back
in its container, not too fussy,
and came here to my desk
to sort the garbage in my head,
amongst which, somewhere (as with you)
surely, pure love must abide,
gleaming like the dungheap jewel.

David Karena-Holmes is a Dunedin writer. A selection of his poems, titled Genesis, was published late last year
