Burial fees set to rise tommorrow

From April 1, the cost of burials in the Queenstown Lakes district will rise.

An interment will rise from $750 to $850, double-depth interment from $800 to $950, and burying ashes/caskets from $750 to $850.

There will also be a $60 increase in the Glenorchy, Kingston, Makaora and Skippers call-out fees, a $50 increase in burial exhumation fees and a $10 increase in weekend fees.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council community services committee received the council's district cemetery review report, and approved the recommended fee changes.

Council parks manager Gordon Bailey said the adjustments had to happen to allow the council to "recover costs of interment and cemetery upkeep" as the council was operating at a loss.

Relative to other cemeteries, the district's fees were not "out of whack", committee chairwoman Cath Gilmour said.

Between July 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010, 44 burials were made including cremations, and cemetery expenditure far outweighed income by $81,532 to $42,740.

The fees will apply at the Wanaka, Queenstown, Frankton, Kingston, Glenorchy, Skippers, Makarora, Cardrona and Arrowtown cemeteries.
