The Otago Museum was the recipient of two gongs at the New Zealand Museum Awards last night.
The museum won awards for its redeveloped science centre and an outreach science exhibition it took to the Chatham Islands last year.
The Tuhura Otago Community Trust Science Centre, which opened in December, was joint winner of the Taonga Maori award for exhibition excellence at the awards ceremony in Christchurch last night, sharing the honour with Museum Theatre Gallery, Hawke’s Bay.
It also won the award for the most innovative public programme, for its Extreme Science outreach programme which it delivered in the Chatham Islands.
That award was shared with the Taupo Museum.
The museum was nominated in two other categories:
project excellence and science and technology. Museum director Ian Griffin said the awards were great recognition of the hard work of the entire staff at the museum.
"The awards are a nice recognition but we do what we do because we really believe in it and personally speaking it’s very humbling."
Dunedin Public Art Gallery was nominated in the innovative public programmes category for its Gordon Waters exhibition.
