Call-out to smokey Port Chalmers police station

The Port Chalmers fire crew was called around the corner to the community's police station this morning after reports of smoke filling the George St station.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand communications shift manager Andrew Norris said after driving the 200m from their Beach St fire station about 9.40am, the Port Chalmers volunteer fire crew discovered a wall heater was sending smoke into the cop shop.

''We thought it was a light fitting on fire but it turned out to be a wall heater that was giving off a bit of smoke,'' he said.

The smokey station and suspect heater were left in the hands of police shortly afterwards.
