Queenstown Lakes District Council spokesman Jimmy Sygrove said the whole track had been closed for safety reasons until a geotechnical engineer had had an opportunity to inspect the site and the rock was removed.
Wellington tourist Lee Sheardan was walking her dog along the track about 5km from Glendhu Bay towards Wanaka when scree started falling from an overhead cliff and seconds later the boulder tumbled down.
Mr Sygrove said the track would be opened again when it was deemed safe.
