Another tree in Palmerston may be cut down.
The sequoia tree by the clock tower may be cut down by the Palmerston Lions club, which had made a ‘‘democratic decision'' to cut it down.
A sequoia tree, on the grounds of St Mary's Anglican Church, is also scheduled to be cut down despite controversy last month about whether it should be retained.
The sequoia by the clock tower was ‘‘the right tree in the wrong place'', Palmerston Lions club president and Waitaki District Mayor Alex Familton said this week.
It was dropping cones in the dray in the gold miner's corner of the land behind the town clock.
The land on which the tree stands is owned by Nigel Moir, of Dunedin, and is maintained by the Palmerston Lions. Mr Moir's permission had been sought to cut down the tree, Mr Familton said.
It is understood the Anglican vestry is to decide the fate of its tree early next month.
