Broom left out of Otago side

Neil Broom is the latest big name to be left off the Otago teamsheet.

The right-hand batsman, who played for the Black Caps 15 days ago, has been replaced by Hamish Rutherford in the team to play Central Districts in the Super Smash in Invercargill today. It is the only change from the team which won its first twenty20 game of the season on Saturday.

Otago coach Rob Walter said Broom's omission was one which continued the plan of giving all the squad opportunities.

Having lost seven of its eight T20 matches, Otago was no longer in a position to fight for a playoff spot and was looking to give chances to different players.

Despite that, he did acknowledge it had been a lean past month for the 34-year-old.

Broom has averaged just 10.60 with the bat throughout the T20 competition.

Likewise he managed a total of just eight runs in his two appearances for the Black Caps.

``Well it's a bit of everything isn't it? There's no one reason,'' Walter said of Broom's omission.

``We're in a position now where we can try a few different things, play a few different players, give guys a few extra opportunities, like a Llew Johnson.

``I mean Broomy hasn't exactly shot the lights out, which has been unfortunate.

``But we know he's one of our key players, so it's important for him to be fresh and ready to roll for the Ford Trophy [one day] campaign.''

Rutherford returns after missing the past two games, part of the same plan to give different players opportunities.

The left-hand batsman had struggled for runs in the competition, only once reaching double-figures - when he scored 51 against Auckland.

``We've spent a couple of really good sessions together working on his game.

``Again not a form issue, Hamish is a guy who finds form fairly quickly and fairly easily.

``But it was also part of creating opportunities for guys to play and get ready.

``So he'll come back in and this will be part of his plan to get him ready for the Ford Trophy as well.''
