Otago Polytechnic senior lecturer Ron Bull speaks to diners at the organisation’s million-dollar dinner on Saturday to celebrate $1 million being raised by the annual Charity House initiative.

Each year for the past 11 years polytechnic carpentry students have built a four-bedroom home, which is then auctioned.

All proceeds go to United Way, which distributes the funds to charities and worthy causes within Otago.

This year’s house sold  for $270,000, a record price, beating last year’s $209,000.

Proceeds from Saturday’s event,  which included a charity auction, go to the Education Foundation to support scholarships for polytechnic students and staff, development of learning facilities, Dunedin Wildlife Hospital and United Way.
