The Weston Bowling Club will celebrate its 70th anniversary this year, but with some sadness as it is considering winding up because of a lack of members.
President Margaret Turnbull said the club had set up a committee to investigate the process of winding up.
Closure would leave about 30 members seeking new clubs, if they wanted to continue in the sport.
The nearest clubs are in Oamaru.
A special meeting on Tuesday night, attended by more than 20 members, voted to start the process of winding up the club.
What course that process will take still has to be determined.
The club owns property in Weston, including its greens and a clubhouse.
However, the club was also determined to hold some sort of celebration - probably before the end of August - to mark its 70th anniversary.
The club had tried to attract new members through publicity, letterbox drops, posting notices and word-of-mouth.
Two women had indicated they could be interested in joining, but Mrs Turnbull said more male members were also needed.
