Rugby: South Island's young stars put best boots forward

Some of the Mainland's future All Black hopefuls were in action at the Queenstown Events Centre yesterday, on the first day of the South Island U-16 tournament.

It is the first time the tournament has been held in the resort and twelve teams from all over the South Island took to the fields.

In the Northern Pool, it was Canterbury Metro in first place, followed by Nelson Bays, Canterbury Country and Marlborough in second, third and fourth respectively.

The Central Pool saw South Canterbury finish in first, with Mid Canterbury second, West Coast third and Buller in fourth.

In the Southern Pool it was Otago Metro which walked away at the top, followed by Otago Country (2), Southland (3) and North Otago (4).

Tournament organiser Richie Anderson, of Queenstown, said the tournament had been running for about 10 years and it was "our turn" to host it.

The tournament continues until Saturday.
