Many Otago teams have had success at the annual secondary schools tournament week.
School teams from around the country meet in more than 100 tournaments for various sports. While it is not possible to report on every team in action, Otago sides have had their share of glory. The region has had three wins in football tournaments, with Kavanagh College and St Hilda’s Collegiate adding to the previously reported success of King’s High School, which won the national junior football tournament in Tauranga.
Kavanagh beat Papanui High School 4-1 in Dunedin to win the Linwood Cup.
Meanwhile St Hilda’s claimed a 2-1 victory in the final of the Lotto Sportswear Cup against Roncalli College.
John McGlashan College attended the co-educational South Island under-15 rugby tournament and won its final 13-10 over Gore High School.
In basketball, Kavanagh College came back from 22 points down to beat Otago Girls’ High School 59-51 in an all-Otago final at the junior South Island championships.
Otago Boys’ High School made the final of the boys’ section — its seventh consecutive top-four finish — but was beaten by Waimea College 79-62.St Hilda’s has qualified for tonight’s final of the girls AA senior championships in Dunedin against Christchurch Girls’ High School.
The three hockey tournaments hosted in the region produced two winners.In the Coaches Cup in Oamaru, Waitaki Boys’ High School was beaten 1-0 in a tight semifinal by Waiuku College, while St Hilda’s finished fourth in the Audrey Timlin Memorial in Dunedin.
At the Jenny Macdonald Cup, in Christchurch, Waitaki Girls’ High School beat Wakatipu 2-0 in the final.In the South Island ice hockey tournament, Wakatipu High School beat King’s High School 3-1 in the final.
Blue Mountain College had success in the South Island netball championships, winning the B grade final 46-23 against Geraldine High School.
The tournament was won for the second straight year by St Hilda’s.
