The 1897 cottage is being recommended for a Category 2 listing on the New Zealand Heritage List/Rarangi Korero.
Heritage New Zealand Otago-Southland historian Heather Bauchop said the recommendation followed the "fantastic" restoration work done on the cottage by the Central Otago District Council and cottage working group.
"More than anything, really, the efforts by the community and council to restore and retain Vallance Cottage underlines the social significance and value it has and the high esteem in which it is held. The local community has rallied around various restoration projects, held fundraising events and undertaken regular maintenance on the property over the years. That Vallance Cottage is today a tourist destination in its own right is a credit to all those who have supported it over the years, including the Vallance family."
The mud brick cottage — which was lived in by many generations of the Vallance family — was given to the Central Otago community by Vallance family descendants in the 1980s. The cottage and the land around it are now owned by the Vincent Community Board.
Ms Bauchop said members of the public were invited to make submissions on the heritage listing proposal.
"The submissions are invaluable. As well as reflecting community opinion on the value of the proposed listing, they can add to our understanding of the property if the public provide fresh insights into their understanding of it."
Submissions must be made by July 28. They can be made by email or post to jhoward@heritage.org.nz or Heritage New Zealand, PO Box 5467, Dunedin 9058.
