The Mosgiel man who died in a crash on Dunedin's Southern Motorway on Tuesday has been named.

He was Richard Gordon Harley.

A heavy truck and the van the 27-year-old was driving crashed near Chain Hills, between the Mosgiel on-ramp and the Fairfield off-ramp on State Highway 1, about 11.30am.

The family spokesman, former Dunedin city councillor Syd Brown, said the former Wyllies Crossing School and John McGlashan College pupil was known for his optimism.

''He always had a smile on his face.''

He supported Koru Care NZ and strapped on the boxing gloves at a Fight for Life event to raise funds for the charity for children with disabilities or a terminal illness.

He completed an apprenticeship as an electrician with Aotea Electric before starting his own company RGH Electrical last year and employing an apprentice.

The crash occurred as he travelled from ''one job to another'' on Tuesday, Mr Brown said.

An investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing, a police spokeswoman said.

Police were continuing to seek motorists travelling in the southbound lane, who might have witnessed the crash.
