Small fire put out

Firefighters  on Thursday attended  a fire in Hanborough House in Moray Pl, Dunedin.

A Fire Service spokesman said a passerby saw a fire in a window in the building and called police.

Police called the Fire Service, which deployed four fire engines about 11.15pm. Residents in the building were  woken and evacuated, he said.

A crew discovered a small fire in a room on the third floor and extinguished it "with no real problems" and used breathing apparatus, a "big freestanding ladder" and a high pressure hose.

The fire was not being treated as suspicious, he said.

There was no indication of how the fire started, he said.

A police spokeswoman said no-one was injured and an ambulance was not required.

A section of Moray Pl was  closed off  between View and Stuart Sts until about 12.30am yesterday, she said.

● A room filled with smoke due to a blocked chimney in a Dunedin house yesterday.

A crew from Lookout Point were called to the house in Glenpark Ave, Mornington, about 2.40am.

● Police are asking the public to remain vigilant after a string of burglaries from commercial premises in Dunedin.

Inspector Steve Larking said "a variety" of commercial premises across Dunedin were being targeted by thieves "in the early hours of the morning".

The premises included service stations. Goods stolen included cigarettes.
